#oscarwatch2011 SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Here’s my question: what the hell is Hailee Steinfeld doing in this category? She god damn narrated that movie. Her character was the main character. She belongs in the Leading Actress category, without a doubt. As a result, I don’t think she’s going to get this one. But props to that actress, she really impressed me.

I haven’t seen Animal Kingdom yet, so when I do, I’ll let you know about Jacki Weaver‘s chances. Props to Amy Adams in The Fighter. Long gone are my memories of Julie Powell and instead Charlene Flemming will remain in my heart, a hair-pulling-sister-beating bad-ass. While I don’t think she’s going to take the Oscar home, Adams has proved herself as a competent and serious actress, and I’m sure she’s going to take home a Leading Actress in the years to come.

That leaves Melissa Leo and Helena Bonham Carter vying for top stop. And trust me, I am in love love love with HBC, especially in The King’s Speech, so this is hard for me to say: but Melissa Leo should get it. Her performance in The Fighter was raw, it was strong, and it was genuine. It’s hard to find good mothers in Hollywood, especially ones that aren’t overly sentimental or cruel. Male directors often overly simplify the nuances to the mother-child relationship, but The Fighter gave an honest performance of family dynamics, and it couldn’t have been done without Leo.

Colin Firth is going to get it. Why? It’s simply a matter of math. Jeff Bridges in True Grit was a joy, but admit it: you really just wanted to be watching The Big Lebowski the entire time. And maybe it’s just my deep-seated loathing for all things Facebook, but Jesse Eisenberg is a wiener – Mark Zuckerberg could have been played by my roommate’s mouldy hot dogs that have been sitting in the meat drawer for five months and they still would have been nominated. As for James Franco, he’s gone to crazy-town and nobody wants to deal with that acceptance speech. Colin’s only competition is Javier Bardem, and while I’m sure he deserves it*, he’s not going to get it. Because Colin is. BAM.

* Haven’t seen Biutiful yet, but I’m excited for it.

I haven’t seen The Town or Winter’s Bone yet, but I don’t need to in order to tell you that Geoffrey Rush is going to take it home. Fingers crossed for a Colin Firth/Geoffrey Rush BFF moment on stage. Because they’re exactly like their characters in The King’s Speech – right? RIGHT?!?!?!

No, I’m not going to tell you what my pick is, so stop asking.  The truth is, I haven’t decided yet.  I know what my favourites are, I know who I want to win, but I’ll keep my mouth shut until I’ve seen Winter’s Bone and 127 Hours.

I will say this, however: Anybody but The Social Network.

weekend update

i got this collection of vignettes for christmas, and have been reading it whenever time permits since then. the style is beautiful and it’s been a huge influence on me.

i am totally and completely addicted to fringe. i’m halfway through re-watching the series because i can’t get enough. it doesn’t take itself seriously, and i love it.

my roommate and i are watching all of the oscar nominees this year. it’s been really fun, especially working out way through the best pictures. tonight, we watch the fighter.

my boyfriend and i spent the weekend house-sitting for one of his uncles. on saturday night, we had some of my friends over. bf and i made a roast pork loin, sweet potatoes (mashed with marshmallows… yum!) and green beans/brocoli. We got to dine on his uncle’s prosciutto and cheese and it was divine.

foodie blogs are my new obsession. my relationship with food is one fraught with anxiety (i’m a really picky eater), so i love browsing food blogs for inspiration and confidence!
